Needle Felting
The characters of Cumbria
Cumbria never fails to inspire creative thought. Capturing the feel of the landscape and the people, flora and fauna that populate it is an ever changing canvas. In fact, there are many ways in which we can express the beauty and sometimes humour of the characters that call the Lakes, home.
One of the key characters in this story are the Herdwick sheep, or Herdys as they are affectionately known. They have been instrumental in making the Lakes look the way it does and we have Beatrix Potter in no small way to thank for that. She also told the story of the Lake District in her 'tales', so simply and beautifully illustrated and timeless in their appeal. Some things stick with you as you grow up, sometimes surfacing with a demand to be heard.
We were looking for another way to express our creativity that captures that humour and character so evident in the place we are lucky enough to call home. What better way to do so than to use the very wool produced from the Herdwicks that so ruggedly roam the fells.
It is unfortunate that wool in general has so little commercial value these days, so finding ways to use it and support our local communities feels the right thing to do. It's fascinating how wool can be sculpted into something with so much character and charm.
Needle felting is a rewarding craft although it's not a quick process. It requires patience, but in its very simplicity it can be a mindful activity with a rhythm all of its own. It's a perfect way for us to capture and express this little slice of heaven.
There will be characters aplenty over the coming months and our aim is to make you smile, it's as simple as that. Watch this space.

There are no bigger characters in the Lakes than the Herdwick sheep. With their ever present smiles they help make the landscape what it is today. You can see why Beatrix Potter was inspired by them and we are too. Our needle felted characters are made from natural fleece with those from the Herdys taking pride of place…..

Our needle felted Herdies have huge character to start with, but we can also create personalised items that reflect your own or your intended gift recipient's personality. The example below was a gift for an avid paddle boarder for Christmas. I've never laughed so much opening a present. Magic!
